Loft Room Hobby Space

Loft Room Hobby Space

Designing and building someone’s dream hobby space is a lovely thing. It’s about creating something that will enable them to have relaxation and happiness in their life. This project did exactly that. The brief was to create a full circuit surface for a grand model railway room and provide display, storage and workbench space in a way that maintained the aesthetic of the timber, brick and beam loft room. To this end, we chose to create a three-point joint hardwood book shelf and overhanging top surface. Shelves were set inline with structural battens to give substantial load-bearing, and to maintain the visual flow. The support frames were created with adjustable feet to allow for the undulation of the existing floor level. The corner spans and radius sections were made as separate elements to the main top surface, so should the use of the room change in the future, these can be removed and would allow the room to be a more general hobby or library space. To finish off the display element for the model railway, defused, dimmable, low profile LED lighting was built into the flow of the eaves ceiling slope.
